LORRAINE DAPHNE SUTHERLAND
(née Budd)
It is with sincere and heartfelt sadness that we the daughters of Lorraine Sutherland announce her peaceful passing at home on February 14, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Kenora, Ontario to Robert and Laura Budd she moved to Winnipeg after the passing of her own mother in 1938 to live with her grandmother and cousins.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Donna (Mark) Edwards, Kim Sutherland and Laurie (John) Kuivenhoven; four grandsons Michael Martens (Kristin), Daniel Edwards (Shelley), Shaun Kuivenhoven (Heather) and David Kuivenhoven; great-grandchildren Savanna Martens, Morgan and Jordyn Edwards, Olivia and Luuk Kuivenhoven and family “The Grants”, “The Ingrams”, “The Peabodys”, “The Sinnotts” and “The Sutherlands”.
Mom met our dad Bob Sutherland through his sister and best friend growing up, Margaret. They became sisters through marriage, and maintained their friendship throughout their lives. Many years of family picnics, camping and parties at “the lake” followed. One of her greatest gifts to us was emphasising the importance of family, we are never alone, whether traveling to Regina for our “Sinnott” visits or picnicking at Kildonan Park all provided love, support and memories of joy and family.
She loved old time country music but had a special love for the bagpipes, often played by our grandfather Neal Sutherland or a talented cousin at the annual Sutherland family picnics.
The best of grandmothers, her grandsons adored her and could do no wrong in her eyes, her great grand children made her smile in delight every time she saw any one of them referring to them all at one time or another as THE KID.
She was our mentor, she taught us to work hard, to be proud of what you do, to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. She told us how proud of us she was and we always knew how much she loved us.
She will remain in our hearts and memories until we meet again.
Mom requested no fuss or service; cremation has taken place and a private family get-together will be planned with internment in the spring.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks to Dr. Peter Bialy or “the cheeky one”, as Lorraine often called him. Also, to the nurses and aids from Palliative Care who helped everyone, most especially Barbara for her care and support.
