January 14, 1936 - April 9, 2019
ERNEST SKUBLICS
Ernest Skublics achieved his eternal rest with his two daughters at his side, on April 9, 2019.
In his final months, he was loved and supported by his wife Janet and son Ken, as well as other family and friends, something that touched him deeply. His sense of humour, his candour, his personal warmth and his clear-mindedness were maintained in his final days.
Anglican priest, Roman Catholic layman, Orthodox believer: Ernie Skublics’ life was centred on serving God, seeking truth, and being faithful. His physical homes included Budapest where he grew up, Winnipeg where he and Christine raised their family, England with his second wife Janet, and many more. His spiritual home was the Catholic Church, but he recognized its presence beyond Rome, and longed for a greater unity. His work in sacramental theology and communion ecclesiology is the distinguishing feature of his career, and his book Plunged into the Trinity: Essays in Sacramental Ecclesiology is on the verge of publication, much to his delight.
Ernie’s sailing adventures are perhaps the most colourful and characteristic features of his leisure time – from childhood races on Lake Balaton to family sailing trips to the north of Lake Winnipeg, culminating in the solo journey from northern England through the rivers of Europe all the way to Turkey. Throughout his life, he expressed himself in writing and also in painting, with a special love for iconography.
He is reunited with his first wife, Christine, and leaves to remember him his wife Janet, his children Kenneth (Denise) Skublics, Heather (Paul) Lampman and Adrienne (Neil) Reimer and grandchildren Peter, Jenny and Isabelle Skublics, Luke, Gabriella and James Lampman, and Isaac and Toby Reimer.
