Debra Lee Moffatt
(née Rensby)
Sadly we say goodbye to our dear mom Debbie Moffatt August 14, 2017. Born October 7, 1956 in Regina Saskatchewan. She is predeceased by her parents Edward and Agnes Rensby as well as her siblings; Glenise, Bill, Gene, and Donna, and her sister in law whom she adored, Brenda Rensby. She is survived by her remaining siblings Alice (Ron) Moffatt, Don (Christine) Rensby, Robin (Judy) Rensby, and Kerry (Sally) Rensby; sister in law Ghislaine (Bert) Rensby, along with her nieces and nephews who loved Aunty Debbie dearly.
Debbie grew up in Regina Saskatchewan where she met the love of her life Murray Moffatt. They resided in Saskatchewan until Murray’s career moved them to Winnipeg, Manitoba. They had three beautiful children; Mackenzie (Karl), Rebecca (Stuart), and Andrew (Jenna). Debbie worked as a legal secretary for Aikens McCauley and Thorvaldsen for over a decade. She decided to use her secretary and office skills as a ministry to the church where she worked as a receptionist for Kilcona Park Alliance Church and later Riverwood Church Community. Her joy was to do the work of the Lord and serve her pastor and ministry staff. She retired herself from the church to devote her time to her grandchildren. She desired to spend as much time with her grandbabies and dote on them as much as possible. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Owen (9), Lilian (7), Joshua (4), and Nora (2). They loved their Nana dearly and loved spending time with her.
In 2014 Debbie was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and our family was set on a path of learning to LIVE with ALS. She experienced many losses as the disease took her ability to speak, eat, and eventually walk but that did not change Debbie’s desire to live for the moments in life. As a family, we decided that ALS would not win here. Sadly, in two very short weeks, we experienced the heaviest of blows from this battle with ALS and Debbie passed peacefully at the hospital with her family by her side, singing and hugging her as she passed.
We will remember so much of the beauty and heart of our wife and mother that her battle with ALS will not take away. Her compassion and kindness to those around her is the legacy she leaves behind. Though at times stubborn and strong willed, she was tender, humble, and filled with grace. She had a way to make you feel welcome and an important person in the room. Her laughter filled the room; how we missed it in these past few years, but her smile did not fade. We knew she loved us all. She would create moments in our lives like someone dropping petals on a pathway. She knew how to make you feel special.
Thank you to the ALS Society for all their support and care for our mother. Thank you to the team with the Neuro Muscular Disease Clinic at Deer Lodge for the continued care. To the Doctors, nurses, and nurses aides at Health Sciences Centre GH7, your care for our mother in such a difficult time truly surpassed our expectations. We were blessed to have such amazing care given to our mother and will never forget the experiences we shared together. You provided dignity, love, and compassion to her and it will never be forgotten. To our family and friends, thank you for standing alongside our mom and family. Your prayers and support during these past few years helped us to continue living LIFE.
A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 at 11:00 am at Riverwood Church Community, 257 Riverton Avenue. Internment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers please donate to the ALS Society and help us find a cure.
