LORNA AILEEN LEUNG
Aileen Leung of Winnipeg, formerly of Swan River, passed away at Tuxedo Villa on May 2, 2017. Aileen was born at Taylors Nursing Unit in Bowsman, MB, the youngest of Mary and James McIntosh’s 11 children. She grew up on the family farm near Bowsman. She left for Winnipeg to attend nursing school. After graduation, she worked as an LPN at the Swan River hospital from 1950 to 1984. She was very passionate and dedicated to her profession, and provided a high level of care to her patients throughout her career.
During her younger years, Aileen played softball. She met Mike Leung on the ball diamond where he was the umpire of a game she was playing. Courtship and marriage followed on July 9, 1951.
Her interests were curling, playing cards and needlepoint. Mike and Aileen spent many years curling with Hugh and Ida Fulford; and playing cards with Helen and Metro Maksymchuk and Lil and Joe Gieni. When she was no longer able to be on the ice, she would watch curling on TV. She was a big fan of Kevin Martin and Rachel Homan. Hours were spent knitting or crocheting afghans and dishcloths or doing needlepoint pictures for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed organizing the Swan Valley Golden Agers show for several years. She was an active member of the Honor Rebekah Lodge #68 and was awarded the Rebekah of the Year. Aileen and Mike were named Swan River Citizen of the Year for their community work. They enjoyed travelling and summers at their Wellman Lake cottage. Aileen was well known for telling jokes and her infectious laugh.
Her grandchildren were the love of her life. Whenever possible she could be seen watching Ian’s dramatic performances, Jeffrey’s baseball games, Kristyn, Kaitlan, and Angela’s soccer games, or Michelle and Alan’ basketball games. Her artistic talent was passed on to Erica and Angela (both have degrees in Fine Arts), Kristyn and Michelle. Grandma often said that she wished that one of her grandchildren would follow her medical career and become a nurse or doctor. Well, two of them were listening. She was able to attend the Medical School graduation of her grandson, Dr. Jeffrey Tompkins in 2013, but will miss Kristyn Buchko’s graduation from Medical School in 2018. She was very proud of all her grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Aileen was predeceased by her husband, Mike, her mother and father, brothers Jack and Chester, and sisters Cora, Rita, Doreen, Vera, Eleanor, Ethel, Betty and Lorraine. Left to mourn her passing are her 5 children - Morley (Trish) of Buchanan SK, Cheryl (Ron Tompkins) of Brandon, Heather (Alex Buchko), Kevin (Kimberly) and Michael (Kathy), all of Winnipeg, along with 8 grandchildren - Erica Scott, Ian (Mallory) James, Michelle and Alan Leung, Jeffrey and Angela Tompkins, and Kristyn and Kaitlan Buchko, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Tracey at Lindenwood Manor and Kammie at Tuxedo Villa for their devotion, care and friendship.
Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CNIB 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg R3G 3M3, or a charity of your choice.
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave to you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness
I thank you for the love you each have shown
But now it’s time I travelled on alone.
So grieve a while for me if grieve you must;
Then let your grief be comforted by trust,
It’s only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on;
So if you need me, call and I will come,
Though you can’t see me or touch me,
I’ll be near
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear
All of my love around you soft and clear.
And then when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with and smile and say
