After a three-year battle with cancer, Ted peacefully passed away Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the age of 77 years.

He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Diane, of 54 years; two daughters, Carrie (Andy) and Jennifer (Rob), grandchildren, Delaney, Robbie, Raylene and his great-granddaughter, Alayna. Ted will also be lovingly remembered by his sisters and step-sisters, Barbara, Iris, Judy, Margaret, Linda and Erna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Vera Keep, step-mother, Evelyn Keep, his sisters, Pat, Jean, Vera-Lynn, brother, Dennis, as well as his in-laws, Ted and Inez McElroy.

Ted was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 13, 1941 and raised in the Weston area.  After numerous small jobs, he joined the Winnipeg Police force February 1, 1961 where he spent 32 years as a police officer, retiring on January 23, 1993.  After retirement, Ted worked for the Toronto Dominion Bank briefly and later on, was a volunteer at the Grace Hospital in the pre-op area.  He picked up coin collecting as a hobby and was known for keeping a meticulous yard.  Ted’s favourite time was spent with his family and friends.  He was always known to put his family first and wouldn’t hesitate to lend a helping hand when needed.  He was very passionate about his grandchildren’s sports activities and looked forward to seeing his grandchildren participating in their soccer, hockey and basketball games.

 

Ted and Diane enjoyed many trips in their retirement years which included cross Canada, down south and Hawaii. Anyone who knew Ted would remember his love of barbecuing. He could often be found on the deck with a spatula in one hand and a special beverage in the other. He also loved his chocolate and was never without an assortment of bars in the fridge to share. He loved to play games and was very competitive! He could often be found around the table, with family and friends, playing a ruthless game of "31", golf, crib or catch phrase.

For the better part of 22 years, Ted also suffered with dystonia, which is a movement disorder.  He was one of the first patients in Winnipeg to have the deep brain stimulation surgery which provided him with a better quality of life, thanks to Dr. Jerry Krcek and his wife, Renee, as well as his team.

Throughout his illness, Ted never complained, and he fought it with bravery and dignity.

​

Ted was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was such a good man. He will be forever missed, and never forgotten. 

​

Many thanks to Dr. James Paul, Dr. David Breckman, Dr. Hobson and the wonderful staff at Riverview Health Centre in unit E3 for all the care provided to Ted over the years as well as in the palliative stage.

​

At Ted’s request, there will be no funeral. However a private Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Dystonia Canada or a charity of ones choice.
