Janis Groenewegen

December 14, 1949 – November 2, 2019

(née Sutton)

After a courageous battle with chronic illness, Janis passed away peacefully at home with her loved ones by her side.

Janis will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Marc; children, Barry (Leanne), Jordan (Jennifer), and Tracy; as well as grandchildren, Kaili, Julia, Justin, and Brett.  She will also be missed by her siblings, Linda (Lloyd), Nancy, Barbara (Dave), Susan (Dave), Fred and sister-in-law Cindy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Janis was predeceased by her son Lyle; parents Frederick and Alice Sutton; brothers, Glenn, Thomas, and Dennis; and sisters, Amy and Valerie.

Family was the most important thing to Janis. She created a stable and loving environment for the family and took great satisfaction in watching the children prosper.  She was always available to provide her insight and advice, usually using her quick wit and direct approach. Over the last few years she was thrilled to have her grandchildren around enjoying the same environment.

Janis enjoyed a 24-year career in Finance and Quality Assurance at Boeing.  She loved her work, worked hard, and took pride in solving problems. Most importantly, she loved the camaraderie of the workplace and always made work fun.  She treasured the many friendships she gained through her work.

Those who knew Janis will remember her for her fun and loving spirit, her strength and determination, her commitment to her family and her grace and courage in managing her illness. She enjoyed the simple things in life and had a passion for outdoors activity, gardening, camping and relaxing with family and friends around the pool.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Yvette Fahmy and the staff at the River West Medical Centre and the WRHA Palliative Care Program for their care.  The family also extends gratitude and love to Lynn Carlson and Nancy Monk for their dedication and loving care provided to Janis.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2019 at the Qualico Family Centre at Assiniboine Park, located at 330 Assiniboine Park Drive, in Winnipeg.
