Joseph Grégoire  (Joe)

On the morning of February 26, 2016 Joe passed away peacefully at the age of 83 at Taché Centre, after a long battle with Parkinson’s and advanced Lewy Body Dementia.

Joe was predeceased by his wife Flora Gregoire (Bérard); parents Dollard and Marie Louise Grégoire (Asselin); brother Gérard and sister Rose Marie Bourgouin. Left to cherish his memory are his only son Mark (Donna) of Thunder Bay and his grand children Ricky, Robby and Joey. He also leaves his beloved partner and best friend, Georgette Dupèré and her family. He will also be sadly missed by his brother Fern and sister-in-law Norma of Southdale; brother-in-law Marcel Bourgouin and family of Saint-Boniface and Margaret Grégoire (Mercer) of Nanaimo, B.C.  Joe will also be missed by many nephews, nieces, and dear friends.
Joe did not have an easy life, as he lost his mother when he was only 4 years old. His mom passed away in a fire accident on the home farm in Saint-Jean-Baptiste, MB. He was than placed in a boarding school with his brothers at five years old. He did all his schooling at La Maison Chapelle in Saint-Boniface, under the direction of the Oblate Missionary Sisters and at the Saint Joseph Orphanage in Otterburne, Manitoba which later became known as La Maison Saint-Joseph, and then as Le Collège Saint-Joseph under the direction of The Clerics of Saint Viateur.

When he was only 18 years old he moved to the Red Lake District, in north-western Ontario, where he worked for 47 years at the New Dickenson Mine, now known as Goldcorp Mine. His first few years at the mine he was able to play hockey with his brothers Gerry and Fern in the Red Lake district hockey league. Joe was a quiet man who lived a simple life. At 65, in 1997, Joe retired from Dickenson Mines and soon after he moved back to sunny Manitoba where he  was able to enjoy many good years of friendship with Georgette Dupèré his best friend. About six years ago Joe was diagnosed with dementia and Parkinson’s diseases.  On April 30, 2010 Joe was placed at Actionmarguerite Saint-Boniface, Taché Nursing Centre.

The family would like to thank all the staff of Taché Centre, floor 4 DE, for the excellent care given to Joe during the past 6 years. Special mention must be made of the outstanding care and attention Joe received from the nurses and support staff, Carmel, Claudette, Gisele, Victoria T., Victoria B., Anna, Zaraida, Lise, Debra, Carol, Meer and so many others. Your devotion and care for Joe was greatly appreciated by the entire family.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will take place this coming spring.

I was fortunate to spend childhood years with my uncle Joe, He always entertaining us with his stories and was a role model in my life.

The memories I have of him are of great comfort and though he will be missed, I am a better person for having had him in my life.  Love you Uncle Joe! I know dad, Aunt Rosemarie and he are so happy to be together again.
