May 10, 1935 – November 4, 2019
Helen Cirkony, daughter of Sophie and John Cirkony, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2019.
She is remembered with love and affection by her four children, Joanne, Debbie, Jim, and Connie (and their partners & friends), her grandchildren Jessica and McKinley, her sister Anne, and relatives. She is predeceased by her parents and her sisters Mary, Rose and Kay.
Helen was born in Hurkett, Ontario, the youngest of her sisters. As a teen, she moved out her family home to work in Redrock, then to Thunder Bay with her sisters Rose and Kay, and finally to Winnipeg with Rose, where she settled. She held various jobs, but her children thought the best was when she worked for Dutch Maid and brought home tubs of ice cream!
Friends describe Helen as a kind, generous and easygoing person, with a good sense of humour. She was particularly fond of country and blue grass music and her favourite artists included Hank Williams, Bill Munroe, Earl Scruggs, Hank Snow, Loretta Lynn, and Johnny Cash. In 1987, her sister Rose took her on a trip-of-a-lifetime to the home of country music: Nashville! They visited the Grand Ole Opry, enjoyed live music, visits to museums, record stores and even met some country music stars.
Helen enjoyed travelling and ventured out west one two occasions. On her trip to Vancouver to see Rose and Connie, she visited some of the main attractions such as Stanley Park, Gastown, and saw the Celebration of Light at English Bay Beach. Other hobbies included playing board or card games with her children, especially Rummy, Hearts and Solitaire. Helen was also known for her perogy-making, which generally were day-long extravaganzas involving all the counter tops being covered with perogies and everything else with flour. She also liked baking cookies, cakes, and muffins for her family. Helen was especially known for her famous barbie-cakes, made for grand daughter Jessica.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Oakview Place, where she received exceptional and loving care for over ten years, and where her wit and easy smile were also appreciated.
A celebration of her life for family and friends will be held in the Summer of 2020. Helen will be fondly remembered as a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Thank you to everyone who sent their kind thoughts and condolences.
