Richard Bennett

January 31, 1945 - December 30, 2018

RICHARD BRIAN BENNETT

With family by his side, Rick passed away December 30, 2018 at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 73.

Rick is survived by his three daughters, Joanne Riedle, Rae-Ann Bennett (Cory Moreau), and Ricki-Dawn Bennett; son Cory Bennett (Catherine); grandchildren Jacey Riedle, Diedre Darbell (Ian), Brendan Bennett-Chevarie, and Erik Bennett; great grandchildren Maybel Murray, Joshua Lafreniere, and Luke Darbell.  His infant son, Michael, predeceased him in 1964.

Rick was born in Winnipeg and raised in Gypsumville, Manitoba.  He was the only child of Marjorie and Eric Bennett.  He was a gifted baseball player and always wanted to be a pilot.  When he and Bonnie became extremely young parents, they moved to Winnipeg where he became a journeyman auto-mechanic.

Dad loved cats and was a voracious reader.  Extremely smart, he was able to fix anything mechanical.  Dad was funny, very sensitive, intuitive and always humble.

Dad mentioned in later life conversations that Michael’s passing was the major catalyst in the direction his life took with addiction and alcoholism.

After breaking his hip over two years ago, his children were once again involved in his life.  Daughter, Joanne, was daily companionship providing care, compassion, understanding, meaningful conversations and perhaps the most love he ever felt.  His last two years of life were possibly his most cherished because of such care.

Dad is finally free and at peace.  His true nature will be sadly missed by all his family including Pork Chop, his cat.  Cremation has taken place and internment will occur at a later date with his family at Brookside Cemetery.
